A sore throat can be caused by the same viruses that cause the common cold and influenza, or it can be caused due to bacteria such as Arcanobacterium and Streptococcus. However, throat problems can also be caused by simple daily habits such as breathing through the mouth during sleep which dries the throat up or from sharing food with people who are suffering from the problem. Both the virus and the bacteria are highly contagious and can be easily transferred saliva or mucus.
Steam inhalation can relieve sore throat
One of the best ways to treat a sore throat is to take steam inhalation twice or thrice a day for a few days. Soon enough you will find yourself relieved to a large extent from the soreness and pain that is commonly experienced by those who suffer from a sore throat.
Steam inhalation works best when taken with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added to the hot water. This helps open up the nasal tract and adds relief to the lungs and throat providing a soothing effect.
What you should drink to treat sore throat
Although warm water with a pinch of salt does wonders to one who is suffering from a sore throat, if you want to make an effective concoction to relieve yourself of the discomfort, make some green tea and add some fine strings of ginger along with the juice of half of a freshly squeezed lime and a teaspoon of honey. Drink this every three to four hours and you will feel better within a day or two.
Some people don’t make the effort to make tea every time they want this, so they simply sprinkle some pepper and salt on a rind of lime, place it on a hot pan for half a minute and suck on this for hours till all the juice has been squeezed out.
What you should stay away from
In order to avoid a sore throat always drink a glass of room temperature water after eating or drinking something cold such as ice cream or cold beer. This brings the temperature of your throat back to normal. The cold is a good place for some of the viruses that are responsible for sore throat to thrive in.
