Home Remedies to Treat Cold Sores Effectively

Cold sores are the result of a virus known as Herpes Simplex Virus, which can be contracted through saliva of an inflicted individual or from touching a cold sore on a person. It takes about a week to ten days for the sores to disappear under usual circumstances.

Usually cold sores are prevailed by sore throat, fever and slight pain around the area where the sore might appear. The sore usually bursts in a few days oozing a semi transparent liquid and ultimately forming a scab over the sore. At this point the patient may feel itchiness around the affected area. In extreme cases the sores may even lead to bleeding.

There are many topical medicines and oral drugs that can be taken to treat cold sores. However, there are natural ways of treating the problem from the comforts of one’s home.

Food products that treat cold sores

The Herpes Simplex Virus can be combated by the antibodies produced by protein components with the help of lysine; a necessary amino acid that should be part of one’s diet. However, since the body cannot create it voluntarily food elements that contain this element should be consumed.

The significance of lysine in treating cold sores is dependent on the ratio in which lysine is absorbed by the body along with arginine, another amino acid. Potatoes, dairy products, cheese and red meat are great sources of lysine. Therefore, to improve the actions of lysine while treating cold sores, foods that are rich in arginine such as colas should be avoided.

Lemon balm and peppermint oil are also known to have healing properties that help in the treating of cold sores.

Precautionary measures for cold sores

Toothbrushes can be potent carriers of cold sores. Therefore, if you have suffered from cold sores in the past be sure to change them on a regular basis.

If you are already suffering from cold sores, wipe the affected area with a cloth soaked in warm soap water to reduce the itchiness.

Exercise daily to improve blood circulation and boost your immunity. This helps to a great extent in preventing and even curing cases of cold sores.
